The Art of Seeing: Medina to Sea

Eleven days. Two extraordinary places. One immersive creative journey through Morocco.

Join us as we travel from the color, energy and layered beauty of Marrakech to the artistic spirit and Atlantic air of Essaouria.

Through art, exploration, culture and creative practice, we'll experience Morocco with curiosity and intention - noticing the patterns, textures, colors, people, places and unexpected moments that invite us to see differently.

Join Kelly Sheets and Valori Wells for a one of a kind, luxury Creatives Retreat in Morocco.

Six nights in Marrakech. Four nights in Essaouria. Two very different rhythms of Morocco.

We'll begin at the award winning Peacock Pavilions on the outskirts of Marrakech, surrounded by beauty, artistry, and the energy of one of Morocco's most captivating cities.

From there, we'll journey west and settle into a completely different landscape at Le Jardin des Douars, a luxury boutique hotel and ksar-style sanctuary near Essaouira. Ocean air, an artistic coastal city, and a new place to explore and create.

With only 12 guests, our time together is intentionally intimate, giving us space to create, explore, connect, rest and fully experience each place.

What we have planned...

  • Creative exploration with Valori through photography, drawing, painting, stitching, pattern, color, writing and intuitive ways of documenting what catches your attention. We'll use the places, textures, people, colors and details of Morocco as inspiration, focusing on curiosity and creating freely.
  • Create your own hand-bound travel journal to hold the story of the journey. Valori will bring prepared custom covers and signatures, throughout the retreat we'll build our journals with photographs, sketches, words, paint, collage, stitching, and fragments of our experience. The journal will become a place to reflect on and practice the tools Kelly Shares throughout the retreat, noticing, patterns, exploring creativity, and bringing greater awareness to how you move through your own creative process.
  • Daily sessions with Kelly giving you tools to unleash your creativity, understand how and why you personally and specifically stop and start the flow of creativity in daily life. Then be able to integrate this way of being once you leave Morocco and head home.
  • Guided tour & exploration of the Marrakech Medina, including the souks, architecture, history, markets and observing the artisans at work.
  • Visit the exquisite Anima Gardens a literal oasis in the desert filled with art and incredible botanical diversity.
  • Three hands-on experiences with Moroccan artisans,  in Marrakech, a nearby village and Essaouira.  Introducing us to traditional materials, processes and ways of making. What we learn will feed back into our own journals and creative work as the journey unfolds.
  • Market and cultural excursions filled with textiles, pattern, color, food, craftsmanship, music and inspiration in both uniquely different cities.
  • Creative exploration of Essaouria - its medina, artistic community, architecture, harbor, coastline, and distinctive character which is unlike Marrakech.
  • Time to make, wander, photograph, write, rest, enjoy the poolside and connect with others. With space built into the journey to absorb what we're seeing and translate the experience into our own creative language.
  • Shop the beautiful textiles, clothing, jewelry, brass work, and endless handmade unique gifts ... right in time for the holidays!
  • And more ... we continue to adapt and add to the itinerary as the time gets closer.

Once you have registered for your week, we’ll follow up with a more detailed itinerary and a small supply list. And, as our trip approaches, we’ll send you helpful information to prepare you for your adventure.

For our final four nights, we'll settle into our countryside heaven near Essaouria. A beautiful property with its own distinctive architecture and atmosphere, giving us a completely different setting for the second half of our journey.

Hidden among the hills, sheltered from the Atlantic winds and set within a spectacular valley shaped over thousands of years by the Ksob River. We will stay in our own private villa with a heated pool in a lush botanical garden.

Is this retreat for you?

  • Do beautiful places filled with color, pattern, and texture light you up?
  • Are you curious about expanding the way you see the world and express yourself?
  • Do you want to experience Morocco in a deeper way?
  • Would you love to be surrounded by creativity, exploration, meaningful conversation, curious humans for 11 days?
  • Are you exploring what else you want to do in your life or want to get to know yourself better?
  • Do you just have the "feeling" that you need to go?

You do not need to call yourself an artist to belong here. You simply need curiosity, a willingness to explore, and a desire to engage with your own creativity.

"Where to begin? My trip to Morocco with Valori and Kelly was a life changing experience —meeting and working with artisans, walking through historical sites starring at the colorful tile work and carved motifs, winding through the souks and seeing and meeting artisans, traveling to the desert and riding a camel, and visiting Anima sculpture gardens were all inspirational.

I also enjoyed the creative sessions and fun activities with our leaders and time to reflect on everything we saw and did. Working with the “SOAR” girls was such a treat and made tears of joy come to my eyes knowing that these girls have made a commitment to stay in school."

And best of all, I couldn’t have asked for a more inspiring, friendly, caring group of ladies to spend a week with.If you are daydreaming about the possibility of a far-flung adventure, find a way to take this trip. It will stay with you in your heart for a long time after."

"My “dip” into Morocco with Val & Kelly was wonderful. Our accommodations at the Peacock Pavilion were fantastic: food, amenities, service. The planned excursions outside of our comfy compound were varied and fun: shopping in the Medina (retail therapy & cultural perspective), tour of Anima Gardens (art appreciation), and the camel ride out in the desert (adventure). Spending a morning with the girls from Project Soar was a most impressive, and heart-warming highlight for me. I can still see the smiles on their beautiful faces, and hear the strength in their affirmations.

Thanks for the opportunity to share the Moroccan experience."

— Lois Pendleton

"Traveling to Morocco was a dream come true. Valori and Kelly prepared us well in advance and once I got to Morocco it was smooth sailing. Every detail was arranged and I could just look out the window and take it all in. It was pure joy. I loved the people zipping around on motorcycles (old and young), the souks, the people!, the architecture, tiles and arched doors. The girls from Project Soar! I loved that it smelled different. The Peacock Pavilion was beautiful and peaceful and the food was wonderful. My favorite part of the trip was spending time with amazing, artistic women. All of us from different places and on different journeys, sharing the same path at least for a while. I’ll never forget them and how they inspired, nurtured, and showed me great kindness.

What I learned about myself was that I was not one kind of artist, but I was all kinds of artist and just maybe my life’s work was creating a joyful life.Valori and Kelly are an amazing team. The trip was beautifully organized, fun and with the right balance of creative time at the Peacock and sightseeing. Creativity and inspiration was a central theme and infused everything we did."

— Roxann Burns

"Our stay at Peacock Pavilions was marvelous. A great time to relax and actually be in the moment. Val and Kelly’s program was very inspiring and educational. I especially enjoyed the time we had to just Play, Breathe, and Create!I have often brought myself back to that trip and remind myself to “Be in the Moment!”Oh, and the camel ride. Did I mention this bucket list experience?"
